Why Join the Guard?
The Massachusetts Army National Guard offers many opportunities for young men and women. The Massachusetts National Guard has the best of both worlds - the advantages and excitement of military service and the opportunity for Guard members to continue their civilian lives in their hometown.
The Army National Guard can be the experience of a lifetime. Guard members are required to serve as little as a weekend a month and two weeks a year.
Adventure!

Adventure is facing new challenges, being awed by their magnitude and overcoming them. From the first eight weeks of Basic Training (a blatant misnomer. There's nothing basic about it.) to the day you walk out with an honorable discharge and infinitely more skill and confidence than you brought in, the Army is an experience you'll never quite leave behind. You develop character that stays with you for a lifetime.
What the Guard has to Offer You
In the Massachusetts Army National Guard you can receive FREE TUITION at any state funded college, university or vocational/technical school for up to 130 credit hours or a Bachelors Degree, whichever comes first.
MONTGOMERY G.I. BILL - $7,110
The New GI Bill is available to qualified members of the Army National Guard pursuing a college degree. Under the New GI Bill, individuals attending a Veteran's Administration approved school will receive a monthly check paid directly to them during those months they attend the Institution. Funding for both Undergraduate and Graduate degrees are available. Full time students (12 or more hours) receive $197.50 per month for 36 months, three-quarter time students (9-11 hours) receive $148.42 per month for 48 months, and part time students receive $98.95 per month for 72 months or $49.47 per month for 144 months. Upon election of this program, members must have, or agree to commit themselves, for six years of remaining service in the Selective Reserve, which includes the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
ENLISTMENT BONUS - $2,500
The Enlistment Bonus is available to qualified members of the Army National Guard. The program pays you $2,500 for entering a bonus skill MOS. You must qualify for the program upon enlistment with the Army National Guard. See your Army National Guard Recruiter for more information.
STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM - $10,000
The Student Loan Repayment Program is available to qualified members of the Army National Guard. The program assists in paying back up to $10,000 of Federally insured or guaranteed loans. You must qualify for the program upon enlistment with the Army National Guard. See your Army National Guard Recruiter for more information.
DELAYED TRAINING OPTION
The Delayed Training Option is available for those individuals who would like to enlist now, start drawing a pay check, and delay their training for later. High school juniors, seniors, college students, and those individuals who have job or school obligations can delay their training for up to 9 months (270 days).
SPLIT TRAINING OPTION
The Split Training Option was created for those individuals who cannot complete their entire training obligation at one time. High school juniors, seniors, college students, and those people who have job or school obligations can "split" their training. They can attend Basic Training, return to their home, and delay up to one year completion of their Advanced Training. The Delayed Training Option is often selected with the Split Training Option. A high school junior or senior can enlist in September, start attending Unit Training Assemblies with their unit, attend Basic Training during the summer, go back to school in the fall, again attend Unit Training Assemblies with their unit, and finish their Advanced Training during the summer of the following year. This program was created especially for high school members.
STRIPES FOR BUDDIES
The Stripes for Buddies Program is an excellent rank advancement tool. Individuals who enlist with less than 2 years of college will hold the rank of Private (E-1). A member who holds the rank of Private may bring two qualified individuals who enlist in the Army National Guard and be advanced to Private (E-2). If that same individual is responsible for three or more individuals enlisting in the Army National Guard can be advanced to the rank of Private First Class (E-3). Each promotion means more money!
PART-TIME JOB
The Massachusetts Army National Guard trains one weekend a month and two weeks each summer. The pay is great and so are the benefits. The selective reserve also offers retirement, which is not offered by a majority of part-time jobs. You can easily earn enough money through both your guard service and your guard benefits to pay for your education, all for only 39 days a year.
